CERVIA, THE SALT TOWN
|
Salt production in Cervia dates back to the Roman age. At the end of the 17th century, the small town, surrounded by the salt flats, was dismantled and rebuilt brick by brick in a healthier area by the sea. Today the salt warehouses, the square watchtower of San Michele and the saltworkers houses stand as evidence of the past, when local economy was entirely based on salt. A visit to the museum, where the ancient salt harvesting system is well illustrated, will complete your tour. The saltpan is an important migratory bird crossroad and as such part of the Po Delta Park. | |
