Ravenna-Hidden Treasures of Ravenna – Half Day Tour

Tour Details

Ravenna, a city with a glorious past, with ancient early Christian and Byzantine mosaics, and eight preserved Unesco monuments, known and visited by tourists from all over the world, from scholars to art lovers.

However, if you are looking for a special and unusual tour, that looks at the famous past of the city but also follows the evolution of the mosaic even in contemporary times; if you wish to know secret gardens and new views of the city; if you don’t want to miss out on a nice stroll in the city center and visit the main square and Dante’s area, then you have to follow us on this tour!

We start with the visit of the Domus of the Stone Carpets, a Byzantine house (VI century) with an extraordinary mosaic flooring. Discovered by chance in 1992 during the construction of an underground garage, the Domus is one of the most important archaeological findings of last decades in Italy. The rich owner spared no expense and decided to cover the whole floor of his house with wonderful mosaics in natural stones and marbles that still show us his eminence and his love for art.

We take a nice stroll in the city center, visiting one of the many mosaic workshops and enjoying a cup of coffee or an ice cream in Piazza del Popolo, the beautiful Town Hall square with its elegant Venetian characteristics.

We pay homage to the major Italian poet visiting Dante’s area, with the evocative flooded crypt of the Basilica of Saint Francis and the neoclassical Tomb of Dante Alighieri: we discover the adventurous story of its remains, stolen from the Franciscan Friars to keep them in Ravenna, and the love of Ravenna people for the poet throughout the centuries.

We immerse ourselves in the peace of Rasponi Crypt: the place, linked to the ancient noble family of Rasponi and decorated with VI century mosaics, is surrounded by an evocative garden with a beautiful fountain and, thanks to a roof garden, give the possibility to admire Saint Francis Square from above and to be nearby the big bell tower of Saint Francis Basilica.

Finally, we visit Tamo, a museum about mosaic’s history and techniques, hosted in a XIV century church.

Here we have the possibility to know thoroughly this ancient art, to be familiar with the materials and the tools and to observe the mosaic evolution until contemporary era: in one of the two cloisters, there is an interesting exposition of mosaics dedicated to the Divine Comedy and realized by great artists of the XX century.

The visiting order of the monuments is not the one listed above and is adjusted according to the needs of visitors. We do not assume responsibility for ticket increases or changes of monuments opening hours that may occur during the year.

Where can I park?

If you are by car you can park in Largo Giustiniano (3.00 euros all day, near the Basilica of San Vitale), or in Piazzale Aldo Moro (free, behind the train station). In the city center there are also several parking lots with parking meters, but usually in here the parking is limited to a maximum of 3 hours. Depending on your needs it may be better to choose one of the two parking areas: we will tell you which one is the most convenient when you book.

If you are by bus the 2 drop off/ drop on points are Piazzale Aldo Moro, behind the train station, and Piazza Resistenza, a 10/15 minute walk from the Basilica of San Vitale. Also in this case we will tell you which one to choose according to your needs.
