The three centuries dominated by the Este family, when the court of Ferrara was among the most refined and cultured in Europe, have left a deep humanistic mark on the city, seen in its churches and frescoed palaces, all while preserving its Romanesque-Gothic medieval heritage. This period also saw the flowering of an elegant gastronomy that remains a highlight of Ferrarese tables to this day
The classic itinerary, for those with their own transportation, begins with a panoramic tour of the perfectly preserved city walls and the Renaissance district, the so-called “Addizione Erculea,” featuring the magnificent Piazza Ariostea.
The walking tour starts at Palazzo dei Diamanti, a true jewel of Biagio Rossetti’s Renaissance architecture, whose dual-facing facade is decorated with thousands of marble “diamonds.” Walking along the elegant Corso Ercole I d’Este, you will reach the imposing Este Castle (external visit only).
From there, passing through Piazza Savonarola, you will enter the medieval heart of the city to see the Ducal Palace, now the Town Hall (external visit only), and the Cathedral of San Giorgio, whose Romanesque-Gothic facade leads into a basilica with late-Renaissance and Baroque interiors.
Finally, from the old Piazza delle Erbe (now Piazza Trento Trieste), with its majestic bell tower and ancient merchant shops, you will enter the Jewish Ghetto, ending the tour in the charming medieval Via delle Volte.
The visiting order of the monuments is not the one listed above and is adjusted according to the needs of visitors. We do not assume responsibility for ticket increases or changes of monuments opening hours that may occur during the year.

Where can I park?
If you are traveling by car, we recommend checking here for updated information on available parking spaces. We also suggest the Ex MOF parking lot (Darsena area), which is usually free of charge and also suitable for buses.
If you are arriving by bus, the main drop-off and pick-up point is located in Largo Castello (in front of the Este Castle). Other loading/unloading areas are available near Palazzo dei Diamanti and Palazzo Schifanoia. We will advise you on the best option based on your logistical needs.
Where do I meet the guide?
If you are already staying in the historic center, the meeting can take place directly in your hotel lobby or at one of the monuments on the itinerary. If you are arriving specifically for the tour, your guide will be happy to meet you at the parking lot or at the agreed-upon drop-off point.
